Assessing Peracetic Acid Application Methodology and Impacts on Fluidized Sand Biofilter Performance
نویسندگان
چکیده
Nitrifying biofilters oxidize harmful ammonia excreted by fish into less toxic nitrate within recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Biofilter performance and resulting RAS water quality largely depend on a robust microbiome that effectively converts nitrogenous wastes; however, occasional use of disinfectants may also be necessary to reduce or eliminate specific pathogens. Disinfectants sanitizers such as peracetic acid (PAA) work disrupting microbial activity could unintentionally alter the microbially-driven nitrification biofiltration process if allowed circulate an RAS. Furthermore, target concentration application method PAA influence level biofilter disruption. For this study, 12 replicated experimental-scale fluidized sand were dosed with achieve concentrations ranging from 1.0-–2.5 mg/L, typical low-dose treatment range opportunistic Two methods compared, including (i) single pulse added every other day for five days, (ii) smaller doses minutes over four hours. The decay was monitored predosing postdosing parameters assessed. Regardless method, addition tested did not cause significant disruption biofilters’ processes. This research demonstrates viable sanitizer industry, although further refine safe protocols is necessary.

Nitrification performance of a propeller-washed bead clarifier supporting a fluidized sand biofilter in a recirculating warmwater fish system
A propeller-wash bead filter (PWBF) and a fluidized sand filter (FSF) on a 28 m recirculating system stocked with tilapia maintained favorablewater quality at five different feed rates, ranging from 0.9 to 4.5 kg feed per day. TAN removal rates ranged up to about 200 g TAN/m of media per day for each of the units. Peak rates of 244 g TAN/m of media per day were observed when the recirculating f...
